Deep, intelligent, and beautiful, February 17, 2005

This deck and the accompanying book are the most profound I have found. I had given up on tarot because the most commonly used decks and books are so materially oriented, mostly interested in money, health, and romance. This deck and book set, however, is both intelligent and spiritually wise. I was a scientist before I retired to explore art and spirituality, and it is a rare book that does not seem naive in one or more of these dimension. Thank you, Pamela and Joyce.

    Powerful Deck, August 10, 2006

I’ve had this deck for about 5 years now, and still really enjoy using them. The cards are beautifully illustrated and leave a lot of room for your own interpretation and spiritual insight. The images I find are mystical and abstract, some more defined looking in their design than others, but they contain subtle messages that don’t over-power you in a reading. If you want to really use your tarot cards as a medium and a channel for your intuitive voice, these are perfect for that because as a deck they are not rigid in their design and meaning; each card has an ‘open’ feel, and you can easily get different meanings from the same card during different readings. To me, thats what I wanted. I didn’t want a deck that would ‘spell’ it out for me, I wanted a deck that would give me the tools for my own perspective and instincts to evolve, and it does just that. If this is your first time buying a deck- Learning what the 4 elements of this deck- air, earth, fire and water- on a basic level represent is an important consideration, and knowing what your major arcana represent is crucial too. But other than that, put the guide book away and liston to your intuition because its the only way you’ll learn how to trust yourself. Goodluck!

New Printing is Great — Major Improvement in Image Quality, August 10, 2012
    By

This review is from: Tarot of the Spirit (Cards)

    The short form:
If you already know you like this deck and are interested in the new edition, buy it now. The printing is so much better, it’s almost an entirely new deck.

    The details:
This tarot deserved a 20th anniversary edition. I regularly recommend the book and buy it whenever I see a reduced price copy — then, I can give it away. I’ve done the same with the first edition of the deck.

If you already know you like this deck and are interested in the new edition, here are a few particulars.

Card by card, every card, the reproductions are much better in the new edition. The images are sharper, the colors appear truer and more varied in their modulation and subtlety. The whites are brighter and lines clearer, the blues are truer and less green. While this is an impressionistic deck, it is clear many of the reproductions in the first edition are simply fuzzy, out of focus and inaccurately colored. There are a host of new details and subtle variations of color which cannot be seen in the prior edition. Some images are slightly re-framed to include more of the original painting that was cropped out of the 1992 edition.

The painter, Joyce Eakins, surely must be thrilled to have this far more accurate reproduction of her original work available to the public. The first printing obscured so much, it’s hard to convey without looking at the two decks side by side. I thought it was painted in oils; it’s watercolor. The difference in print quality is that substantial. If you own it and like it, you owe yourself a copy of this new edition. This new deck is much more harmonious in terms of color, with finer gradations and more accurate reproduction of the whole spectrum.

The font has been changed on the titles to a serif font which is smaller and softer. It is much like that used on the box of the deck, but all caps on the cards. The subtle hand-drawn quality doesn’t translate well to small scale, but it does make them less obtrusive. The US Games copyright is considerably lighter and less obtrusive in this new edition as well. Even the backs are rendered better.

The first edition has reasonably heavy plastic lamination which is durable, but shiny and reflective. The new printing is on a matte cardstock that is slightly less flexible. I prefer flexible cardstock, as the wrists can be strained if one works with cards a great deal. Good, flexible cardstock won’t wear out. This stock is much more gentle than Paulina Tarot, which is arduous to shuffle.

This deck is highly recommended to practitioners of esoteric tarot and collectors. The companion book is one the best ever published and complements many decks, and the new printing is improved enough to be considered a wholly new deck.
