Shadows of Life and Thought: the Autobiography of A.E. Waite

A.E. Waite was one of the most famous occult authors in the English language. The Rider-Waite tarot, designed by Waite and illustrated by Pamela Coleman Smith, is the most popular in the world and the template for most modern tarot decks. The accompanying A Pictorial Key to the Tarot, is one of the bestselling books on the subject. As translator of Éliphas Lévi’s dogme et rituel de haute magic, (Transcendental Magic) he has influenced and inspired much of the occult revival in the English-speaking world, including his arch-enemy Aleister Crowley. Books such as The Hermetic Museum, The Book of Black Magic (or Book of Ceremonial Magic) and works on Rosicrucianism, alchemy, Freemasonry, the Grail tradition and other esoteric subjects are widely read today. Shadows of Life and Thought, long out of print, details his life from his early love of books and the realm of Faërie through his involvement with the Golden Dawn and Freemasonry and his friendship with Arthur Machen to the esoteric Christian mysticism that became the centre of his life and work. Newly typeset, this Bardic Press book reproduces the text of the original edition.
