  1. This is the “typical” deck for Tarot cards, and I feel it is a great deck to begin with in order to start learning. I bought these as a gift, since I have the same deck for myself (which was also my very first deck).

  2. The Rider-Waite-Smith (RWS) Tarot was designed by Arthur Edward Waite, illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith and published by Rider Company. This is one of the most popular tarot decks out there. With so many clones of the RWS Tarot, you can get a better looking version that maintains the original line drawings. However, if you are a tarot collector, this deck is one to consider. These cards are 4.75″ x 2.75″, the standard size for US Games tarot decks, and as such easy to handle. The back of these cards is reversible, with a simple crisscrossing of blue and black lines on white. The Major Arcana are numbered at the top, in roman numerals starting at 0 with The Fool. These cards are labeled at the bottom. On this deck Strength is VIII and Justice is XI, swapped from the Tarot of Marseilles. Many of the images on the Major Arcana seem updated version from previous decks, such as the Tarot of Marseilles, Etteilla Tarot and Cary-Yale Visconti Tarot. However, I consider the following cards distinctively RWS Tarot:I. The Magician – Loop over the magician in ceremonial robesVI. The Lovers – Two naked lovers in front of an angelVII. The Chariot – Chariot is pulled by Egyptian sphinxesVIII. Strength – Loop over woman in robes dominating a lionX. Wheel of Fortune – Wheel surrounded by sphinx, serpent and houndXIII. Death – Skeleton on a horse holding a flagThe Minor Arcana are arranged in four suits: wands, swords, cups and discs. These cards have been traditionally associated to the elements of Fire, Air, Water and Earth. The pips 2 to 10 are numbered at the top, but the Aces are not. All of these are labeled at the bottom. One of the few innovations in tarot was that the pips were fully illustrated, showing scenes of people portraying the meaning of the card. Like the Aces the court cards are only labeled at the bottom as Page, Knight, Queen and King of each suit. This deck comes in a fitting box with a little white book (LWB). Suffice to say that this deck is one that collectors must consider.
