This book is not about the Spanish deck, as it states in its title. There can be some discussion whether a Spanish deck is 40 or 48 cards; but definitely, a deck with 56 cards is NOT a Spanish deck at all, it is simply Tarot’s MINOR ARCANA. For those who don’t know what I am talking about: a Spanish deck is organized in four suits, the same 4 used in tarot, but traditionally pip cards range from 1 to 7 in some versions (40 cards), and from 1 to 9 in others (48); while court cards are only 3 per suit: page, knight, and king. A Spanish deck NEVER has neither TENS nor QUEENS. In this book the pips range from 1 through 10, and there are FOUR court cards per suit, including queens… and this only has 1 name, my friend: that’s TAROT’s Minor Arcana. Despite unverifiable historical reasons the author gives for this, I challenge anyone to find nowadays a Spanish deck in any store as the one described in this book… Never mind how the Spanish deck came to be the way it is, if you want to write a book on it, you have to respect what it IS today (and don’t write on what you think it should have been…..)
